Nebraska's Lakes & Rivers

Go on—grab an inner tube.

Or a kayak or a pontoon boat or a livestock tank—you know, whatever floats your boat.

Wherever you are in the state—and whether you plan to cannonball in, lazy-float or launch a boat—you'll find your share of lakes and rivers in Nebraska.

Rivers

With 80,000 miles of river, from shallow, gently meandering streams to deeper and faster-flowing adventures, Nebraska has plenty to offer. The Niobrara National Scenic River is North America’s first International Quiet Trail and cuts a gorgeous path through the rolling Sandhills. The legendary Missouri River is equal parts historical landmark and natural wonder, carving scenic bluffs along Nebraska’s east coast. Whether you’re hopping onto the Platte River for a floating adventure or to see the awe-inspiring sandhill crane migration each spring, you’ll want to plan a visit. And head to the central part of the state for the Dismal, Loup and Calamus Rivers for unique excursions. Nebraska’s rivers offer so many ways to explore. Whether you want to do it via kayak or canoe, or leisurely float in a tube or, even by tanking (lounging in a stock tank with your friends, a cooler and snacks), there’s a method and a speed for everyone to enjoy!

Lakes

Wondering if landlocked Nebraska has lake adventures? You bet! With more than two dozen natural and man-made lakes, there are plenty of options for fishing, swimming, boating, watersports or just enjoying a day on the beach. The biggest is Lake McConaughy near Ogallala, with 30,000 surface acres and endless possibilities for recreation. Head to the northeast for Lewis and Clark State Recreation Area and combine your day on the water with the history of the famous expedition. Calamus Reservoir offers an unexpected beach and excursion in the rolling Sandhills. If you’re in Lincoln or Omaha, be sure to make the short trip to Branched Oak Lake.
