The museum is housed in one of the last GAR (Grand Army of the Republic) Memorial Halls in the state. The exhibits and artifacts on display tell the story of the Civil War from its origins to its legacy, as well as the stories of freed and enslaved African Americans, civilians on the home front and the Nebraska regiments that went off to fight.

Ashfall Fossil Beds is an active fossil site where excavations takes place every summer. Complete fossil skeletons are revealed and left in place for public viewing. The fossil bed is protected by the Hubbard Rhino Barn.
