Helpings of History

The area’s can’t-miss landmark is Scotts Bluff National Monument, just as it was for travelers on the Oregon, California, Mormon and Pony Express Trails long ago. This natural wonder spans 800 feet above the surrounding North Platte River and nearly 5,000 feet above sea level. The long process of erosion has left an icon that is as beautiful as it is rich with history. Check out the museum and visitor center to learn about the cultural treasures of the area, then ascend to the top for unbeatable views of the surrounding landscape. Whether you want to drive to the top or treat yourself to a scenic hike, there are plenty of ways to explore.

The century-old building was relocated intact from its original location and preserves the fascinating history of the area’s Japanese and Japanese Americans.
